Sunglasses

Sunglasses that protect, not just darken.

A carefully chosen range rather than a wall of brands: UV-protective pairs for every day, polarised lenses for driving and water, sunglasses made to your prescription, and small pairs for small faces.

  • UV protection first

Every pair we recommend blocks UV. Darkness alone is not protection.

  • Polarised for the road

Cuts the glare bouncing off tarmac, water and car bonnets.

  • Made to your prescription

Tinted or polarised lenses in your power, in a sunglass frame or a clip-on.

  • Kids' sunglasses

Small, flexible pairs for growing eyes, which need protection most.

Protection

What UV protection actually means

UV-A and UV-BVisible lightUV400 lensDimmed, protected
Stopped at the lens

A UV400 lens blocks ultraviolet up to 400 nanometres, the range linked to cataract and damage to the surface of the eye. The filter is in the lens material, not in how dark it looks.

Passes through, dimmed

The tint only controls brightness and comfort. A very dark lens with no UV filter is worse than no sunglasses: the pupil opens wider behind it and lets more UV in.

UV stopped at the lens; visible light dimmed

Ultraviolet exposure adds up over a lifetime and is linked to cataract and damage to the surface of the eye. A UV400 lens blocks it whether the tint is light or dark. The one thing to avoid is a very dark lens with no UV filter: it opens the pupil and lets more UV in than wearing no sunglasses at all.

Glare

Polarised, or a plain tint

Ordinary tint

Everything gets darker, including the glare. The shimmer on the road and water stays.

Polarised

Vertical slits in the filter block horizontal reflected light. The glare goes, the view stays.

The same road through an ordinary tint and a polarised lens

For driving, riding and time near water, polarised lenses are a genuine step up: the road stops shimmering, water turns clear and colours look deeper. The one trade-off is that some phone and dashboard screens look dark or patchy at certain angles.

For everyday wear a good UV tint is enough, and cheaper. We will say which you need.

Your power

Prescription sunglasses

If you wear spectacles, you do not have to choose between seeing clearly and being comfortable in the sun. We make tinted and polarised lenses to your prescription in sunglass frames, and photochromic lenses that darken outdoors in your everyday pair.

A magnetic clip-on is the third option: one frame, and a sun clip that snaps on in a second.

  • Photochromic lenses that darken outside
  • Magnetic clip-on frames: one pair, two looks

The range

  • Everyday and fashion

Classic and current shapes for daily wear, chosen for fit and protection as much as for looks.

  • Kids

Flexible, UV-blocking pairs sized for small faces. A child's eyes let more UV through than an adult's.

  • Eclipse viewers

Solar eclipse viewing glasses are among the specialty items we carry. Ordinary sunglasses are never safe for looking at the sun.

Good to know

Questions people ask us

Honest answers, in the same words we use across the counter. Anything else, ask us on WhatsApp.

  • Do you sell prescription sunglasses?

Yes. We make tinted and polarised lenses to your prescription in sunglass frames, and photochromic lenses for your everyday spectacles.

  • Are polarised sunglasses better than normal ones?

For driving and for glare off water or roads, yes. For general wear a good UV-protective tint is enough. Polarised lenses can make some screens look dark at an angle.

  • How do I know if sunglasses block UV?

Look for UV400 or 100% UV protection on the lens or the label, and buy from an optician who can tell you what the lens is. Price and darkness are not reliable guides.

  • Do children need sunglasses?

Yes, more than adults. A child's lens lets more UV through to the retina, and a large share of lifetime UV exposure happens before adulthood. Small, flexible UV-blocking pairs are the answer.

  • Can you repair sunglasses bought elsewhere?

Usually. Loose temples, nose pads and minor adjustments are handled at the counter, subject to the frame's condition. See our spectacle repair page.

  • Do you have eclipse glasses?

Solar eclipse viewing glasses are among the specialty items we carry; message us to check availability before an eclipse. Regular sunglasses, however dark, are not safe for looking at the sun.
